Middlesbrough repelled a Sunderland fightback to claim a 2-1 victory in the Wear-Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light.
Cristhian Stuani’s brilliant first-half brace – the first a stunning 25-yard strike before a splendid team goal on the stroke of half-time – put Boro in the ascendancy. Patrick van Aanholt’s converted a rebound in the 71st minute to give the hosts some hope but Boro held on to earn their first win of the season.
