Manchester United players should learn to cope with Jose Mourinho’s public criticisms, according to former player Deco.
Portuguese midfielder Deco played under Mourinho at Porto, with the 39-year-old a key figure in the club’s Champions League success in 2004.
Mourinho left for Chelsea that summer, while Deco departed to join Barcelona.
Deco then moved to Chelsea in 2008, a matter of months after Mourinho had been sacked as manager at Stamford Bridge.
Now boss of Manchester United, the Portuguese’s abrasive manner has reportedly caused a degree of friction in the Old Trafford dressing room – particularly his rather public criticism of Luke Shaw after a recent poor performance.
But Deco has advised players to simply learn how to cope with the manager, as someone he simply “knows better”.
“If you are playing at a club like Chelsea, United, Barcelona, Madrid – the big clubs – you need to be prepared to do your best,” he said. “If you want to play at a high level you need to be able deal with everything.
“I don’t like the coach criticising me, but he knows better than us players and sometimes he does that not to pressure players but to give something different. He knows better than us, he’s with them every day and of course the players don’t like it but sometimes it works.
