Expectation on Pogba is “too large” – Deschamps

France coach Didier Deschamps thinks Paul Pogba needs to be given time to settle back into life at Manchester United.

Pogba completed a world-record £89million move to the Red Devils in the summer after spending four years away from Old Trafford at Serie A side Juventus.

The midfielder has produced a couple of man-of-the-match performances for United since his return – most recently in their 4-1 victory over defending champions Leicester – but has equally struggled in other matches so far this year.

However, after a mixed start, his national team coach is backing him to become more consistent once he adjusts to his new team-mates.

“He has changed his club team and needs to find his bearing with his new team-mates,” Deschamps said.

“With Paul, we always expect more. When he does something neutral, often it is not enough. He is someone we expect to make assists in every game – there is an expectation that is too large.

“Paul is okay in his own head. He knows what he wants.”

Jose Mourinho has opted to pair Pogba with Ander Herrera in the last two matches in the league and the Portuguese coach reckons they can form an effective partnership going forward.

“Ander can be an important player for us,” Mourinho said, “because we play with four attacking players plus Paul who likes a lot to go to different positions, to try and create.

“But we need a player like Ander because he is very fast on the defensive transition, he can give us the security we need, especially against fast counter attacks.”
