Manchester United are reportedly “kicking themselves” about failing to insert a sell-on clause into the deal when they sold Michael Keane for just £2.5m to Burnley.
The centre-half called up by England this week has been linked with a £25m move to Chelsea little over a year since United sold him to then-Championship club Burnley for a pittance.
The Sun claim questions are now being asked at United about another player allowed to leave the club for a small fee after just a handful of first-team appearances.
“The club is kicking themselves over it and some people are now keeping their heads down,” a club ‘insider’ has told The Sun website.
“There is a fear they could be hearing ‘we told you so’ in the near future. He has always been highly-rated by United’s reserve coaches.”
The Sun add that ‘t is not known whether United have first-option to buy-back Keane if a fee is agreed’, which makes is think that the insider really isn’t very far inside at all.
