Ndidi To Hit Eagles Camp Monday, Expects Tough Zambia Clash

By Kayode Ogundare:

RKC Genk of Belgium midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has that he will arrive at the Super Eagles camp in Abuja on Monday for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Zambia billed for October 9 in Ndola, Zambia.

The 19-year-old, speaking exclusively to Completesportsnigeria.com, said he would depart Belgium for Nigeria immediately after featuring for his club in the league game against KV Mechelen on Sunday evening.

Ndidi, who made his competitive debut in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania in Uyo in September, reckons Zambia will not be easy but the Eagles must give whatever it takes to get all three points.

“Contrary to the general feelings, particularly among the fans, Zambia are not a weak team and I don’t expect us to treat them as such. We’ll not take our foot off the throttle until the final whistle and the maximum three points will be our target from the game. We must play every game like a cup final and that’s exactly what we intend to do in Zambia,” the former Flying Eagles defender told Completesportsnigeria.com.

A super regular for his Belgian club, Ndidi also took time out to reflect on Genk’s impressive 3-1 win over Sassuolo of Italy in last Thursday’s Europa League group game.

He said: “We lost our first game narrowly (3-2 to Austria Wien) and Sassuolo also proved difficult at first and made things difficult for us. However we were able to turn things around and made it easier by playing more as a team and scored two quick goals to take the fight out of them. Nevertheless they are a good side. Our next game is against Athletic Bilbao and we have resolved to take things as they come and play without pressure. If we do that and just play our game, I’m sure we’ll get a good result.”

Ndidi has started 10 games for Genk with eight of those in the league and two in the Europa League and he has been cautioned once. A win for Genk against KV Mechelen will be their first in four domestic league games.

Genk sit top of their Europa League group although all four teams are tied on three points apiece and the Belgians are 10th in the Belgian top flight table with 10 points, two fewer than Sunday’s opponents.
