Neville: I was ‘sh*t’ during later Man United years

Gary Neville admits he “was sh*t” during his later years of playing for Manchester United.

Neville broke into the United first team in 1994, establishing himself as the club’s first-choice right-back under Alex Ferguson.

He was an almost-constant in the defence during the club’s most successful years until injury and form saw his game time restricted from 2007 onwards.

He played just 36 Premier League games over the course of his last four seasons, before retiring in February 2011.

The 41-year-old, who won eight Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues amid numerous other medals at Old Trafford, made his final appearance for the club on New Year’s Day 2011.

He has since admitted that he should have retired after that game – a 2-1 victory over West Brom in which he performed poorly.

Speaking at a Legends of Football event on Wednesday, Neville admitted: “I was s**t at the end.”

According to Manchester Evening News, he went on to concede that he should have retired from playing after kissing Paul Scholes following victory in the Manchester derby in April 2010.
