Ox admits ‘surprise’ over ‘star boy’ Wilshere’s call

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has admitted that Jack Wilshere’s decision to join Bournemouth on loan was “a surprise”.

Wilshere moved to Bournemouth on a season-long loan in the summer in an attempt to secure regular first-team football away from Arsenal.

His game time at the Emirates Stadium was likely to be restricted this season under Arsene Wenger, with Mesut Ozil, Granit Xhaka, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin battling for central-midfield places.

The 24-year-old has played four games for Bournemouth since joining, and Oxlade-Chamberlain admits he was shocked to see him leave Arsenal – even temporarily.

“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a surprise,” he said.

“I give him a lot of credit for having the courage and the fight to make something like that happen. He felt it was right for him and he went and did it and I have a lot of respect for that.

“I hope he comes back. He’s been the star boy of Arsenal. Fans love him. He’s an amazing talent and an integral part of the squad.”
