Report: England to delay search for Allardyce’s successor

The Football Association will wait until after Gareth Southgate’s four games in charge before starting their search for the new England boss, according to reports.

The Daily Mirror claims that Southgate will be given a chance to impress during his interim period as the Three Lions manager, in which he will take charge of the senior squad for the remainder of 2016.

Southgate will come up against Malta, Slovenia and Scotland in World Cup qualifiers and will be able to test himself against Spain during a friendly next month.

The report continues by saying that FA director of elite development Dan Ashworth and chief executive Martin Glenn have provided the former Aston Villa defender with assurances that he will get his chance to impress.

Another factor in their decision to delay an appointment could be to do with Arsene Wenger’s contract situation at Arsenal, after the Frenchman admitted he could be interested in the role.

Meanwhile, The Times has reported that Southgate will earn £500,000 for his two months in charge of the national side, which is understood to be the same as a year’s salary in his England Under-21 head coach role.
