Former England assistant boss Gary Neville says “it’s embarrassing” that Wayne Rooney apologised after he allegedly drunk at a hotel last weekend.
The Sun newspaper alleged that the England captain appeared to have been drinking heavily during a night out in the capital after England’s Wembley win over Scotland.
The paper alleged that Rooney dropped in on a wedding party and they printed a photo appearing to show the Manchester United forward, sporting an England training top, looking the worse for wear. They described him as ‘paralytic’.
The 31-year-old missed England’s draw with Spain on Tuesday with Gareth Southgate insisting a knee injury was the reason why the United man was pulled out of the squad.
Rooney has since apologised, but former United stalwart Neville, who assisted Roy Hodgson, at Euro 2016 says his apology was unnecessary.
Neville tweeted: “It’s embarrassing. Wayne Rooney shouldn’t have apologised . Or if he did his fellow teammates should have been with him!”

Neville then suggested that Rooney had been hung out to dry by the other unnamed players and staff that were present.
Replying to Michael Vaughan’s tweet labelling the story pathetic, Neville added: “Exactly and Maybe the ones that were with him shouldn’t have let him take all the crap on his own!!”

But he admitted there would be a formal investigation after alcohol rules were broken.
“Don’t make a drama out of it. We are having a proper investigation into what went on. It’s disappointing,” Glenn said. “It’s appropriate that he apologised. It doesn’t set a great tone for the England captain but I don’t want to over-dramatise it either.
“Were there FA staff involved? We’re establishing the facts. We’re talking to people who were there to find out if anybody from the backroom staff was involved.
“Why on earth would you be doing that given there is a team agreement around alcohol consumption during camp? There would be questions asked for sure.”
Glenn has admitted the FA will work with players in order to establish rules for how they use their downtime in future.
