Ten Premier League players make Fifa’s 2016 ‘The Best’ shortlist

• Mahrez, Vardy and Kanté recognised after Leicester’s title success
• Agüero, De Bruyne, Sánchez, Özil, Payet, Ibrahimovic and Pogba also on list

Ten Premier League players have been shortlisted for male player of the year at Fifa’s inaugural “The Best” awards. The new incarnation for the world player of the year comes after France Football magazine reintroduced its Ballon d’Or award (formerly the European Footballer of the Year Award), which had merged with the Fifa equivalent in 2010.

The Leicester City duo Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy, along with N’Golo Kanté, now at Chelsea, have been recognised for the Foxes’ fairytale title success.
