Martin O’Neill rules himself out of contention to take over at Stoke

• Republic of Ireland manager indicates he is not interested in job
• Stoke’s search for Mark Hughes’s replacement continues

Martin O’Neill has rejected the chance to take over at Stoke City, delivering another blow to the Premier League club, who have missed out on three managers since sacking Mark Hughes nine days ago.

O’Neill’s decision to remain with the Republic of Ireland leaves Stoke in an extremely difficult position and it now appears increasingly likely the club will seek to make a short-term appointment until the end of the season by turning to someone who was nowhere near the top of their original list of targets.
