National League restart: come to the stadium but don't go in the stands

Wealdstone fans will gather in the clubhouse for a live stream of a game taking place in front of its blacked-out windows

It will be one of the strangest sights of the weekend, if not the season, but Wealdstone supporters watching their team from inside the stadium’s social club, glued to a stream of a game taking place metres from their blacked-out windows, is not a figment of the imagination. When Chesterfield visit on Saturday the club’s first match in the top tier of non-league football for 32 years will be a landmark occasion for the wrong reasons. “We should be so excited and happy, but it’s flat,” says the chairman, Rory Fitzgerald.

An almost comical consequence of fans being banned from watching from the stands but allowed into indoor social clubs is that Wealdstone, and other non-league teams, will have a small number of supporters in their ground following the game on a screen. There is, though, a serious side.
