Rooney ‘stayed in hotel to avoid controversy’

England captain Wayne Rooney reportedly ‘feels hard done by’ after choosing to stay in the team hotel rather than go clubbing with his teammates.

According to the Daily Mirror, ‘Rooney told England team mates that he did not want to join their big night out for fear of being pictured, caught up in any controversy and wanted to avoid the spotlight’.

That plan backfired as he joined a wedding party in the team hotel and posed for pictures that showed him looking – in The Sun’s words – ‘paralytic’. He was apparently advised to leave the party but returned ‘after guests pleaded with him for more pictures and selfies’.

The Daily Mail claim that a member of the England security team informed Gareth Southgate at 11pm that Rooney, Phil Jagielka and various members of the FA staff ‘were beginning to make a spectacle of themselves’ and the caretaker manager sent a message that Rooney should be gently led away.

According to that report: ‘He had no idea that Rooney had chosen to secretly return to where a wedding party was only just getting started, and was stunned when it emerged that he had in fact partied until 5am.’

Southgate will have a formal interview for the England manager’s job on Monday and he is expected to be asked to explain why the players were given free time on Saturday night when Sunday was a full training day.
